PREPARE YOUR HOLIDAYS IN BALI

THINGS TO DO IN BALI

We have gathered some suggestions of places to visit during your trip to fully immerse yourself in the local culture and the Balinese landscapes.

Whether you are interested in cultural visits, hiking through rice fields or mountains, swimming under waterfalls, or simply relaxing for a few days on a beautiful beach and discovering the underwater diversity, you can tailor your stay as you wish. We hope it will help you create wonderful memories.

    • MUNDUK is located at a higher altitude in the cooler mountainous region of the island. Here, you can find hiking trails, visit waterfalls that are less crowded than those around Ubud, soak in hot springs, take cooking classes, or explore the UNESCO-listed rice terraces of Jatiluwih, which are far less frequented than the Tegallalang terraces in Ubud. For families with young children, it may be practical to bring a carrier to carry the little ones on your back and enjoy the walks. Plan for 2-3 nights if possible. You can hire a driver/guide for the day directly through your accommodation.

    • UBUD is the cultural heart of the island, known for its craftsmanship, traditional dances, and numerous temples. In August, the city center can be quite crowded, so expect traffic jams. However, this stop seems essential due to the many sites to visit and its unique spirit. If you prefer a quieter stay, choose a hotel or villa 10 minutes from the city center. The best way to get around is by scooter if you feel comfortable; otherwise, taxis are readily available. Cultural visits, the monkey forest, temples, museums, markets, souvenir shopping, rafting, and quad biking are all options. We recommend visiting tourist sites early in the morning (8 AM) to avoid the crowds. Ideally, plan for a minimum of 3 nights.

For those interested, Ubud is the ideal starting point for hiking Mount Batur and witnessing the stunning sunrise from its summit, either on foot or by Jeep.

    • SIDEMEN is an authentic Balinese village surrounded by expansive rice fields, overlooked by the majestic Mount Agung. Here, you can enjoy tranquility, stroll or bike through the rice paddies, visit nearby waterfalls and temples - possible activities include silver jewelry workshops, cooking classes, massages, relaxation, and soaking in the peaceful ambiance of the region. Ideally, plan for 2 nights.

    • CANDIDASA is a village by the Indian Ocean. This is where we have chosen to get married. You can visit the water temple or the beautiful beaches nearby. Plan for 2 or 3 nights. Ideally, arrive on August 10 at your accommodation to settle in before the wedding.

    • AMED is a charming fishing village located at the eastern tip of Bali, still preserved from mass tourism, with a stunning view of Mount Agung. Renowned for its beautiful underwater scenery, it’s an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. You can set out on foot directly from the beach to reach the best snorkeling spots on the island. Whether you are a diver or not, you will appreciate the tranquility, beauty of the area, and its breathtaking sunsets. Plan for 2 nights.

    • GILI AIR or GILI MENO are located off the coast of Lombok. They embody the idea of serenity and paradise beaches. You can walk or bike around the island, rent a mask and snorkel on the beach, and explore the fish and turtles just steps from the shore. Gili Meno is the least developed island, offering fewer accommodation and restaurant options. In our opinion, Gili Air is the perfect compromise between the overcrowded Gili Trawangan, known for its parties, and Gili Meno, which might be a bit too tranquil. Regardless of which island you choose, you will enjoy the tranquility whether as a couple or with family.

To get there, we recommend the Ekajaya boat company, which is the most reliable. You can book tickets online at 12go.com for better prices than purchasing at the ticket counter. There are two ports to reach the Gili Islands: Padang Bai (2-hour crossing), which is closer to Candidasa (the wedding venue) and Amed, or the port of Serangan (2.5 - 3-hour crossing), which is closer to Seminyak and Sanur. If possible, opt for morning boat trips as the sea is calmer. Plan to spend a minimum of 3 nights on the islands, as the journey to and from can be time-consuming; allocate at least half a day for travel. Do not plan your return to Bali on the same day as your flight back to France, as boat delays are common and you might miss your flight.

    • NUSA LEMBONGAN & NUSA CENINGAN: Unlike the Gili Islands, these islands are part of the Bali archipelago. You’ll find white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, beautiful underwater scenery, manta rays, cliffs, seaweed farms, and temples. This stop is great for those looking to explore islands just 45 minutes by boat from the port of Sanur. We do not recommend booking a day trip to the neighboring NUSA PENIDA, which unfortunately suffers from its popularity. Day tours are often overcrowded, which detracts from the experience. If you wish to discover Nusa Penida, a beautiful island, we recommend staying 2-3 nights there to visit the sites early in the morning before the crowds arrive. However, note that it’s not an ideal island if you are not comfortable driving a scooter or if you are traveling with young children, as you would spend too much time in a vehicle, and accessing cliffside sites can be dangerous for children.

    • ULUWATU is located at the southern tip of Bali. This area has become quite trendy and popular among surfers and young adults without children. If you wish to stay here, consider Balangan or Bingin and take the opportunity to visit the Uluwatu Temple or the stunning beaches of Padang Padang, Melasti, or Nyang Nyang. Uluwatu is quite lively, with a mix of luxury hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, and bars. An overnight stay is not necessary; you can easily do a day trip from Seminyak or Sanur, spend the day on one of the beaches, visit Uluwatu Temple, watch the Kecak dance performance at sunset, and finally enjoy a seafood dinner on Jimbaran beach with your feet in the sand.

    • SANUR or SEMINYAK are two beach resorts that can be convenient stops upon your arrival in Bali or the night before your departure, as they are both located close to the airport. For families with children and retirees, Sanur is quieter and more pleasant, allowing for walks or bike rides. There are plenty of activities and restaurants suitable for young children around Sanur.

Seminyak is livelier, offering some of the best restaurants on the island, numerous shops of all kinds, and bars. You’ll also be near Kuta Beach, an ideal spot for surfing lessons.

In both Sanur and Seminyak, choose a hotel or villa close to the beach so you can easily walk there and enjoy sunsets on your bean bag with a coconut in hand.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

  • Book your plane tickets in advance to benefit from better rates. Don’t hesitate to compare prices for round trips from Amsterdam to Jakarta (CGK) versus Amsterdam to Denpasar. Often, it’s more cost-effective to transfer at Jakarta airport and book a domestic flight afterward from Jakarta to Denpasar. Be sure to allow at least 2.5 hours for your layover in Jakarta, as you’ll need to collect your baggage, go through customs, and recheck your luggage for the domestic flight. For domestic flights, you can book on Traveloka or Tiket.com

  • Check the expiration date of your passport: it must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date to your home country.

  • It is recommended to apply for your VOA tourist visa online 1 week before arriving in Indonesia to avoid extra waiting time at the airport.

  • You can complete the customs declaration online to save time 2 days before your arrival in Indonesia.

  • The N26 or Revolut card is ideal for making payments or withdrawing cash at ATMs without banking fees.

  • If you wish to exchange cash for IDR, only use official exchange offices with illuminated signs showing the exchange rates at the entrance. Be sure to check the total before leaving the exchange office.

  • Bring your international driving permit if possible.

  • Buying a local Telkomsel SIM card at the airport is very convenient, inexpensive, and allows you to use local mobile apps, order taxis, and have 4G data everywhere.

  • Download the Grab and Gojek apps for your scooter or car rides.

  • For taxis from the airport, it’s best to book in advance via booking.com for unbeatable rates or use the GRAB app upon arrival; there’s a booth at the airport exit.

  • For short-distance travel, a scooter remains the most practical and quickest option, but you can also choose a taxi via GRAB or GOJEK, or book a driver for longer trips. Note that you won’t find many Grab or Gojek vehicles outside of Seminyak and Sanur, so it’s better to plan for a driver.

  • For your accommodations, you can book via Booking, Agoda or Airbnb.
